How to tag someone on Instagram

You might think that Instagram is about photos and videos, but without the hashtags, nothing would work. After all, tags of all shapes are essential on Instagram and knowing how to tag correctly could mean a lot to you and the person you're tagging.

L’HASHTAG

Hashtags are exactly what makes the whole social media platform work. You can't do that, but people actually use the search bar on Instagram for more than just finding an account to follow. Some people like to explore this content-rich social media platform through hashtags.

But how do you answer the question of how to tag someone? Well, while the hashtag doesn't really mean tagging an account, it could mean a lot to influencers and people who care about their reach and following. This is especially true if they use a unique hashtag; if you also use it when you tag your posts, you are likely to spread them and help them gain new followers.

The hashtag can be placed in Instagram posts, but also in Stories, although hashtags in Stories are often rejected for hashtag aggregation, regardless of whether your profile is public or not. That said, if you want to tag someone, it's worth a try, as you might just give them some extra exposure.

How to find out who follows your profile on Instagram

TO MENTION

Quotes are often confused for labeling. The main difference here is that when you mention someone, you do it in the post description. This means that their name will not appear in the real photo when your followers tap on it.

However, mentioning someone will notify you and give you the option to add the post to your Story, which is a great reshare tool.

This is also a great thing for the “mentioned” part if the profile that mentioned them is private. If you have access to the profile of someone who mentioned you, you can reshare it as a Story. Tagging someone in a post doesn't make it editable, but it does have other benefits.

TAGGING

When it comes to the good old tag, it essentially does what it has always done since the early days of Myspace: get a name under your face or wherever you've been tagged on the photo. This allows your followers to access the profile of the tagged person directly from your post, which is useful, especially if there are multiple people in the post.

However, what the tagging also does is that it adds the photo you were tagged in to the section Picture of you on your profile. People viewing your profile will often visit this part, and having great content in your tagged posts is almost as important as having great content in your posts section.

When it comes to posts, both tagging and mentioning are very helpful for the tagged person, and both actions only take seconds.

STORIES

With the introduction of Stories, however, a new form of tagging was introduced. First, you can't really tag someone in the story. As a matter of fact, it's called a "mention" and, for all intents and purposes, it's a mix of a mention and a tag.

When you mention someone in your story, add the "@" sign before their username, as you would in the post description. However, the mention is usually placed as a tag, next to the person in the photo. Tap the mention and you will see the user's name.

Where post tags don't allow you to reshare the post you're tagged in, Story Quotes allow you to reshare a Story you've mentioned in your profile. This is very useful for the same reasons for re-sharing Stories posts.

HOW TO DO IT

The real technicalities behind hashtags have been simplified. To mention a hashtag, just add the "#" symbol before it. For example, if you wanted to create the actor James Franco hashtag, you would just put #jamesfranco. You will likely be prompted for several hashtag choices, so pick the one with the most followers.

To mention someone in a post, simply add the "@" symbol in front of their name. As soon as you start typing your username, you will be prompted for a list of profiles. Just choose the person in question. To quote someone in a story, either go to typing mode and do the same thing, or go to the option Wall Stickers and choose the “@mention” sticker.

To tag someone in a post, select a photo and once you're on the subtitle screen, tap Tag people , tap anywhere in the photo and type the name of the person you want to tag.

IT'S ALL PEOPLE!

When it comes to tagging on Instagram, it is very important to know what type of tag (hashtag, mention, story mention) to use and when along with knowing how to actually do it. It is always recommended to run all kinds of tags that is possible, but sometimes no hashtags and mentions work better than both, aesthetically.

And keep in mind that aesthetics are very important on Instagram. How do you tag people? Have you ever thought about it? Share your thoughts below.
