The bushido or way of the sword is the concept that is best suited to Furi, the indie title of the boys of The Game Bakers: “Sometimes in life you have to deal with things that you think you are unable to do. But remember that the only limits are those of the mind. The impossible is just your mental restriction ”.

This transpires from the entire adventure narrated in Furi, now finally available also for Nintendo Switch: literally our protagonist will break the chains of his prison to venture on a journey to the forgetful underworld and guided only by his strength, his readiness and a restless and troublesome spirit.

A complicated prison created by a brilliant mind and made up of levels with different characteristics and manned by different but all extremely aggressive guardians, is in fact the playing field. Our task is to escape from prison, but it will not be easy since there is a force that is so powerful as to endanger the very existence of life, which is why it is locked up in the depths of the most powerful cage ever created: us.

In practice Furi consists of epic and very difficult boss fights, each with different characteristics; instigated by our companion who remembers, in addition to features also for phlegm and ambiguity, the man-rabbit of Donnie Darko, we will have to kill and overcome each of the levels that separate us from our goal: the meeting of our memories and the desired freedom. In fact, nothing else will happen, given that the interludes between one floor and another are simple interludes aimed at developing the dreamlike plot that makes up the fabric of the title, but don't think about getting by with little for this: killing guardians is no easy task on any difficulty level.

The protagonist of Furi has at his disposal a firearm for long-range combat and a blade for close-range attack. Both features are unique and allow you to load the shot for a greater effect. Another important element is the dash, which allows you to get out of the most difficult situations with an elegant shot that can overcome any target. Finally, we find the parry that allows, if performed with the right timing, to recharge your energy or make a powerful and close attack.

The vital energy bar of the jailers encountered along the way is divided into sections: this happens because each section corresponds to a precise and often lethal attack pattern to which the player must pay the utmost attention in order to memorize the sequence suitable for the counterattack ; not paying attention means dying quickly. Furthermore, the game environment is bent to the will of the jailer on duty, which makes the task of killing them significantly more difficult.

In general, the adventure lacks a thread in longevity but it is a negligible feature by virtue of the low price and the deliberately high difficulty of the game in order to involve the player in an enterprise capable of satisfying him once completed. The ensuing ballet, (we use this term which is almost reminiscent of a rhythm game), it requires a very high level of timing and attention, and consequently the trial and error is a constant peculiarity of Furi.

In any case, if the frustration were to reach extreme peaks, you can always reset the difficulty level at any time making everything more accessible: however, we advise you not to give in immediately to the temptation to switch to an easier mode given that much of the concept it is based precisely on the personal challenge which in this way would diminish.

The neon graphics with clear psychedelic references in the style of “Il tagliaerbe” is the best you could think of for a title like this. The digital dream atmosphere with the warrior facing enemies one after the other armed with only the sword is a clear reference to the 80s and 90s, and in our opinion, thanks to a minimalist soundtrack and ad hoc effects, is perfectly in line with the atmosphere that the title conveys. The audio sector offers a truly complete and rich experience thanks to a soundtrack capable of underlining both the excited game phases and the interlude sequences with softer and more suitable textures for the context.

Furi - Review

Furi is a very well studied title capable of transmitting a great emotional and adrenaline impact to the player. Both the dream plot and the excited upward-oriented gameplay are aimed at finalizing an intense and pleasant gaming experience. Numerous references recall the media panorama of the 90s and also the graphics and the soundtrack are aimed at increasing this feeling. Perhaps the only flaw that can be found is the not too high longevity, but it is forgiven by virtue of the overall experience. Not recommended only for those gamers who don't like a high level of challenge.
