One Piece Pirate Warriors 4: Tested - Gamescom 2019

Among the various games brought by Bandai Namco on the occasion of this Gamescom 2019 we also find the new One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, last chapter of the musou drift of the famous opera by Eiichiro Oda. This is the first real contact with the game after the announcement a few months ago during the Anime Expo.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 will cover the arc of Big Mom, or the one that concerns the landing of Luffy's crew in the Whole Cake Island, in an attempt to save Sanji from his family. Like all licensed musou, the plot takes liberties that justify the wandering of Luffy and friends around the island by eliminating thousands and thousands of enemies as if they were flies. In the demo we played in Cologne, we even faced Big Mom long before the original fight.

In terms of gameplay, the news, albeit minimal, are there: first of all we find the aerial combos, now introduced in the flow of regular combos simply by pressing the jump button. This allows you to give incredible variety to the classic concatenations seen in previous chapters, allowing Luffy to show off his new skills.

Obviously, there are also special moves, which can be used whenever the cooldown bar is reset and which allow you to eliminate huge amounts of enemies in a short time.

The other big news, however, are the transformations and, in the case of our test, we refer to Luffy's Gear Fourth. The transformations in addition to allowing you to do more damage and be more resistant, allows you to access a whole series of completely different combos and moves. We do not know if all the other playable characters will be allowed to "transform" or in any case access a power status that can allow him to vary his move set, but since they proved to be particularly effective during the Big Mom boss fight, we think it will be a mechanic available to everyone.

Speaking of boss fights, the clash against the great empress turned out to be more difficult than those seen in the past. This is because apparently the Bosses that we will face along the various levels of the game have precise moments in which they can be hit, in addition to the fact that to make them drop the energy it is necessary to reduce the armor bar to zero.

As you can imagine, this aspect makes the boss fights on average longer than expected, as well as a hair more reasoned. An undoubtedly positive aspect for a musou, whose difficulty is renowned for being practically nil.

From a technical point of view, although it is the first title developed mainly for the current generation consoles, no particular steps forward have been seen. On the front of the character models it is not a problem, also because the cel-shading graphics help to give that anime aspect faithful to the original work, while where you feel a deficit is in the settings, which although they have gained destructibility, remain a lot approximate and simpleton.

Waiting to find out some more details on new modes and new playable characters (seven have been announced at the moment), One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 seems like a game in line with its predecessors. Ideal for lovers of the genre and especially for users of Oda's work.
