Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury: Preview

Since 12 February will be available Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, game that combines the Nintendo Switch port of the title originally released on Wii U, with a new section called Bowser's Fury. New trailers have finally shown the gameplay clips of this new Mario adventure, also revealing interesting details: let's try to understand something more together, examining in detail every aspect and the many news that await us.

A brief but necessary clarification: the most substantial part of the title is, obviously, made up of Super Mario 3D World, re-proposed in a version filed under different aspects. Like any good Nintendo platformer, the work released in 2013 hasn't aged a day and is based on a winning combination, which combines the possibilities of Mario's 2D titles with the total freedom of movement guaranteed by the third dimension. The most awaited addition, for the basic version, is certainly the presence of a multiplayer mode not only locally, but also online, capable of supporting games of up to 4 players, who can freely choose between Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach, each with unique characteristics in terms of gameplay.

Well aware of the solidity (and what lies ahead) in the original game, what we want to focus on today is the new game content: Bowser's fury. This new section breaks away from what we saw in 3D World, with a structure no longer composed of distinct levels: in fact, we have one large area, Sgattaiolago, within which there are several separate islands. The visual sensation, to make a comparison, is what you would have inside a hypothetical level of Super Mario Odyssey with enormous dimensions. The similarities with the Mario of 2017 are not limited only to the aesthetics, but are underlined by a type of sandbox game in which the islands are explored in total freedom: the camera also adapts accordingly, appearing like free and no longer fixed (at least in most cases).

The various areas of the game are separated by an immense expanse of water, on which we can move with the help of Plessie, an aquatic dinosaur already seen in Super Mario 3D World. In what looks like a Mario Sunshine callback (and it won't be the last either), the clear water becomes dirty with a mysterious black slime - an element connected in some way to Bowser - which also covers some of the tops of the towers present in each of the islands: without the trusty Splac 3000, the only way we have to advance is to collect collectibles present (like the classic stars of Super Mario Galaxy), called Solegatti .

An element that already transpires from the trailers is the importance given to the role of Mario gatto, Mario's iconic transformation seen in 3D World, which transforms the Italian plumber into a plump feline, capable of climbing vertical walls and attacking swooping enemies. In this sense, even the design of each enemy shown has been slightly modified, recalling the appearance of a cat: a choice that cannot be random and that perhaps suggests how the level design of Sgattaiolago goes to enhance the possibilities even more. provided by this curious power-up. At the same time, however, other classic transformations such as Mario tanuki or Mario martello make their appearance, just to name a few.

Another interesting surprise is the presence Bowser Jr., this time in the unprecedented role of ally. Having buried the hatchet, Mario's aspiring nemesis acts as a sidekick within Bowser's Fury, helping the player with a special brush (much like the one used years ago in Delfinia in Super Mario Sunshine) allowing them to easily get rid of some particularly annoying enemies, or using its power to reveal some hidden object or power-up. In cooperative mode of the game, Bowser Jr. can be controlled by a second player through the use of a Joy-Con.

In Bowser's Fury some of the boss fights already seen in 3D World return (in the video you can in fact see Pom Pom). But what would Bowser's Fury be, though, without having the King of the Koopas as its antagonist? Redesigned with a much darker look than usual, Princess Peach's serial kidnapper comes in a new version called Furious Bowser. A not very reassuring aspect that translates into brutal attacks on Mario, consisting of fiery jets and incandescent lapilli: back to the wall, Mario only has to escape, waiting for the monster to retire. However, escaping cannot always be the solution and sooner or later the time comes to counterattack: to do so, it is necessary to collect a sufficient number of Solegatti, which then go to unlock a Gigacampana, a new object able to transform the Nintendo icon into Giga Mario Gatto, allowing him to confront Bowser on equal terms.

How is it possible to notice in the background in one of the final sections, what appears to be a second Gigacampana appears in the distance: that the gigantic power-up is not unique? A possibility not to be excluded and which could indicate the presence of more than one clash with the new version of Bowser.

All this looks very promising, with substantial news and variations on the theme compared to what is seen in Super Mario 3D World. Also by looking at the size of the map however, it is difficult to understand what longevity will be of this bonus adventure of the game, especially considering how part of the horizon is just occluded by the slime that also surrounds Bowser, which perhaps hides some interesting surprises from the eyes.

The new trailers reaffirmed the potential of Super Mario 3D World and showed how Bowser's Fury is much more than a filler, with a structure that distances itself from the main game and offers a different experience, which could push even those who already have to buy. stripped the original. Further details remain to be understood, such as the longevity of the adventure at Sgattaiolago: we remain very confident, however, anxious to be able to test the complete game next month.
