Blacksad: Under the Skin - Gamescom 2019 preview

If we were to explain Blacksad: Under the Skin to you in a nutshell, it would be these: a detective cat, XNUMXs America reimagined as metropolis of a universe populated by anthropomorphic animals, a suicide that smells too much like murder.

The public niche that already knows the Spanish graphic novel, written by Juan Díaz Canalès and Juanjo Guarnido, has long been anxiously awaiting a new album (the last one came out in 2013), and could perhaps find in Blacksad: Under the Skin a small hors-d'oeuvre to silence hunger, even if only briefly. There videogame transposition of the style of such a defined and unique narrative universe could fail but it is instead incredibly on point, also succeeding in the soundtrack to (re) create the mood that already transpired from the comic; particular credit must be given to the dubbing, savory of that expositive rasposità worthy of the best Humphrey Bogart.

If the visual and acoustic mood of the title seemed really successful, well beyond the impoverished sublimation in videogames of a solidly comic concept, there are some aspects that make you shake your head and that could seriously weigh down the quality of the "final" title.

First of all, the synchronous between labial and voiced: the root cause can safely be attributed to the original dubbing in French, nevertheless it remains an element that violently drags the playing out of the suspension comfort of disbelief in which music and characters had so wisely accommodated it; the second drawback of this production is the poor care of the environments, not up to the level of the characters who cross them. There is a microscopic third observation, one aspect of the gameplay that again tends to undermine the gaming experience: the movement by John Blacksad is a victim of the famous inaccuracy of tank controls, resulting in the different moments of frustration in which we found ourselves, for example, climbing that flight of stairs for the 4th time or bumping into that wall instead of being able to hit the door .

Blacksad: Under the Skin, despite its obvious flaws, remains a noteworthy title, a product on which we will keep our eyes focused in the hope that there is the desire and time to file the corners that are still too sharp.
