Cat Quest II: Tested - Gamescom 2019

The videogame market is certainly abundant with indie and minor titles, but only a few make it, managing to emerge from the crowd for various merits. Among these was Cat Quest, born for mobile and PC and later also landed on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Even without boasting of playful or artistic revolutions, with its simple and captivating formula, combined with the visual style and the “cat-like” setting, it has made its way into the hearts of many players. From its first release in 2017 until today it can boast a result of over 400 thousand copies sold. Even the writer found it a delightful title, as we explained in our review of the Switch version.

After more than two years from the release of the first game, The Gentlebros is about to release Cat Quest II: The Lupus Empire, which we were able to try at Gamescom 2019 in the booth of the publisher PQube.

The original title had a parody and sympathetic tone due to the presence of references to pop culture and cats: names of places, puns, descriptions ... everything was in a feline key, and however simple it created an atmosphere that knew how to infect with its good mood. This will still be a prominent aspect in Cat Quest II: The Lupus Empire, and as you can guess from the subtitle there will now be references to our canine friends as well. In fact, the new game will bring us back to Felingard, but the new story will focus on the rival continent of Lupus, inhabited by anthropomorphic dogs., and of course that will leave room for even more cues of adorable cheesy humor.

The main feature of this new chapter will be a second protagonist that we can control at will, which in fact will be a dog living in the new continent. We will be able to control one character at a time and switch to command the other with the simple press of a button, while the secondary will be managed by the AI. The most interesting feature, however, is the possibility to play co-op local multiplayer along with a friend, who can join at any time in the game. The new feature paves the way for new gameplay variables, both in battle and for puzzles in dungeons.

It should be noted that anyway the gameplay mechanics remain essentially identical to the predecessor. After all, the strengths of the first Cat Quest were its simplicity and accessibility: it would have been a misstep to complicate things without a real reason. They will obviously add new content such as weapons, skills and spells, so the possibilities will be more broader.

During our test the canid protagonist was a warrior armed with a sword, while the cat specialized in magic. With our test mate we obviously embarked on a basic tactic where the warrior engages the enemies up close while the cat mage targets them from long range. Both characters share the experience and the money obtained, in such a way as to avoid any risk of competition or difference in level between the two. In this way the game mood remains relaxed and cooperative even in co-op.

The style of the world map and dungeons will be familiar to players of the first chapter, but the graphic quality has been enriched with details and special effects. A welcome visual update, which does not want to overdo it in realism so as not to distort the original style.

The impression we have left from our test is a bigger Cat Quest but still more of the same, even if always fun. Cat Quest II doesn't revolutionize its friendly, lighthearted gameplay, but adds more content, a playable character and a new story. Anyone who enjoyed the first chapter should definitely keep an eye on it, especially if they have a friend to join their gaming sessions.
