Almost three years ago, the highly anticipated debut on Xbox One and PC Cuphead, a run and gun that had bewitched the audience of E3 2014 thanks to the wanted one graphic style that reproduced the rubber hose animation in vogue at the turn of the twenties and thirties of the last century. The following year the game was ported to Mac and in 2019 also to Nintendo Switch.

The PlayStation 4 version comes as a surprise last last July 28, with the beautiful trailer that you can see below, made by Studio MDHR in collaboration with Stop Motion Department. The timing is excellent, if we consider that a few days before the animated transposition of Netflix was announced.

The PlayStation 4 version of Cuphead is completely identical to the original version after the patch: the port is of absolute quality. There is no additional content, since The Delicious Last Course DLC, which should have been released by last year, has been postponed to 2020 and has not yet been released (and could be further delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. which has already caused, understandably, several slips). No online features have been added, so the cooperative mode remains exclusively local. No optional concessions whatsoever have been added. The launch price also remained unchanged: € 19,99.

Cuphead - PlayStation 4 Review

We have already talked about the game in depth with our Francesco Nava, who tested it on its first release, focusing on both the Xbox One and PC versions. Here we will limit ourselves to outlining the main features of the work of Studio MDHR, founded by the brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer (who on the official website sympathetically identify with Cuphead and his brother Mugman.

Cuphead is a ruthless run and gun that looks to the XNUMXs for graphics and the XNUMXs for gameplay. Its peculiarity consists in the almost exclusive focus on boss battles, which are 19. In addition to that, the attack patterns of each of them change according to the chosen difficulty level. Cuphead turns out accessible in easy mode, but the latter will not allow you to face the last two bad guys, and therefore to actually finish the game. At the normal level, which is the standard level of the game, so to speak, after the first world bosses things will start to get really difficult and sometimes even frustrating. However, if you succeed in the difficult task of completing the adventure, you will also unlock a difficult mode, absolutely prohibitive for most players.

In addition to the boss battles there are six levels proper, in which the fundamental aspect does not consist in killing the enemies (indeed, the game rewards you with a trophy if you finish them all without killing anyone), but in the collect coins, necessary to purchase weapons and equipment, which in turn guarantee bonuses such as increased health (at the expense of attack power) or invulnerability during the dash. In theory, these are optional sections, but to win the game you will absolutely need to buy power ups and adapt the build to the enemy, so the advice is to complete them as soon as possible (even if they are not the best of life) and to talk to NPCs, who sometimes give away coins. Away with the tooth, away with the pain.

Cuphead - PlayStation 4 Review

Cuphead, everyone already knows, is one of the best independent works of the generation that is coming to an end, especially on an artistic level. The PlayStation 4 port is identical in all respects to the versions previously released over the last three years, although this is by no means a bad feature.
