E3 2019: Ghost Recon Breakpoint - Proven

Since its announcement, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint it aroused a certain interest in us, perhaps stemming from the new mechanics or just from the desire to return to play the role of Ghosts, the fact is that we couldn't wait to get started on the game.

"You are no longer the hunter, now you are the hunted."

At E3 2019 we had the chance to try Ghost Recon: Breakpoint for a full two hours, time that allowed us to complete various activities and two end-game activities consisting of the Behemoths, which we will talk about shortly.

But let's start from the beginning: before immerse ourselves in the lands of the Auroa archipelago, one of the development team members told us the story behind the game again. Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is set in 2033, so about four years after the events of Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and this time we will be guests of the Auroa archipelago, characterized by the most disparate combinations, including snowy areas, other marshy, mountainous areas and so on. What drives us to go to Auroa are suspicious activities carried out by the Skell Technology: this forces the government to send the Ghosts on reconnaissance to find out what is actually happening on Auroa. Led by Nomad, our team reaches the archipelago by helicopter but finds an unpleasant surprise: Auroa is now under the control of the Wolves, a special force led by Cole D. Walker, an old acquaintance of ours.

But it's time for action: another member of the development team prepares us for our mission with a real briefing that makes us seem to be real soldiers. We were shown the missions to be completed, strictly in co-op with two other journalists and a developer who guided us, as well as a coach who from the rear as well as commenting on our super kills gave us some suggestions and obviously made himself available to answer all our concerns. But we are ready to take action with our first mission, which sees us intent on attack a complex that holds Skell Technology engineer Paula Madera hostage captured precisely by the Wolves. Our goal is to locate her, rescue her and plant three bombs to destroy the wolf complex.

Being a Ghost Recon, nothing is left to chance: before reaching the complex we must organize ourselves, get to know our companions and decide how to approach this mission. There are four characters in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint: Vasily, Fury, Fixit and Nomad, each of which can equip one of the available classes; Panther, Sharpshooter, Field Medic and Assault. THE'Assault it will be equipped by players who like to be on the front line since they have the special ability to recharge part of the life and reduce damage for a short period of time and also have the Gas grenade as their exclusive object. The Field Medic (field doctor) is essential as a support for any team, in fact thanks to his special ability he can launch a drone that shoots healing darts at allies, so that they can heal or even revive them. The Panther is a class designed for stealth, they are in fact equipped with a spray that makes them invisible to radar and have a smoke grenade as a special object. The Sharpshooter is a class designed for snipers, characterized by a special object that, if placed in a certain area, allows you to locate enemies, so you know when it's time to change the air.

The doctor class was unfortunately not available during the demo, so we could only choose from the three remaining ones. We, having Vasily as a preset character, obviously chose the sniper class, organizing our equipment with everything necessary for the mission. An interesting feature of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is precisely the bivouac, a camp that we can set up with our team in safe areas and that allows us to craft items including syringes and bandages, or select buffs lasting half an hour each that improve stamina, accuracy, speed and much more. Once our refueling is complete, we immediately start with the rescue mission, the same that we have seen in the gameplay published so to speak. Reached the complex we begin to divide the tasks: we, with our sniper, we post in an area with an excellent view and after spotting all the enemies with the drone we begin to clean up all the sentries while our companions enter sneaking into the complex by eliminating the remaining enemies.

We loved the mechanics of this mission, the collaboration between the team members was vital and once the mission was completed we felt like real Ghosts. Having brought Madeira to safety, we are preparing to face the next mission, which is actually a bit particular, it is in fact a Faction Mission. These particular missions, in the full game, will be added periodically after launch and will be characterized by the presence of different factions to face, which will then activate these faction missions. To face it we obviously equipped ourselves again at the bivouac and left towards our goal, dividing the tasks once again: we shot down the bulk of the enemies present with our sniper, Fixit in the meantime went to the drone to deactivate it, Nomad and Fury instead headed towards the mission objective, easily reaching it thanks to our excellent work.

Given the excellent cooperation of the team and given the speed with which we completed these first missions, the developer proposes that we immediately face the Behemoth, but not the classic one in the demo, but an even stronger and more complex version to deal with. We obviously accept the proposal and head with our helicopter towards the boss area, easily recognizable thanks to the limitations of a fence. Dealing with the Behemoth is definitely not child's play, as it is indeed a purely end-game activity, we encountered many difficulties in passing the test, but thanks to the coordination with the other team members in the end we were still able to complete the challenge, obtaining interesting objects, some very rare. Being a kind of tank, with the ability to throw huge quantities of grenades, colliding with him from close range was practically impossible, so as for the other missions we opted for a division into roles, with us often going to stun him thanks to the EMP grenades while the other players attacked him with frag grenades or directly with the rocket launcher, with the ultimate aim of doing as much damage as possible.

The clash with the Behemoth seemed really interesting to us, and it lends itself perfectly to the end-game activities of a game like Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, so much so that we can't wait to try it again with our hand to be able to land it again. We asked the developers if any other end-game activities were planned and they obviously confirmed that the Behemoth is just one of the activities that we will be able to face and that there are many others in development which will be released both at launch but also periodically after the game is released. From this point of view we are extremely confident and from what we have been able to prove it seems that the developers have actually listened to the needs of the players, who have always shouted loudly for the introduction of these fun long-term group activities.

Being a game very similar to its cousin The Division 2 and its predecessor Ghost Recon: Wildlands, we would like to clarify that at least in our opinion it is a title that must necessarily be played in co-op to fully enjoy the experience of game offer. It will also be possible to play in single player thanks to the presence of companions with an AI which should be advanced, but we feel that playing with friends, coordinating via voice chat and celebrating a win with them is priceless. We therefore recommend that you start gathering your friends right away and prepare for the release of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint because it will be fun.

After trying Ghost Recon: Breakpoint for about two hours, we left satisfied, both for finding solid gameplay typical of the Ghost Recon series and for spending two hours of absolute fun in Auroa. The innovations introduced in this new chapter partly enrich the gaming experience by offering survival elements, for example, but partly also respond to players who have long been asking for more varied missions and more end-game activities. There is obviously no shortage of news on the front of weapons and objects, which now allow greater variety and therefore guarantee the player the possibility of adapting to his style of play. We look forward to the early BETA stages of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint to return back to the Auroa archipelago with our friends, hoping to face the dreaded Behemoth.
