E3 2019: The Outer Worlds - Preview

After Microsoft's acquisition of Obsidian, the last title to be cross-platform is likely to be The Outer Worlds, RPG that seems to take a lot of the style of Fallout, although the concept is very different. During a closed-door presentation we saw about 20 minutes of gameplay in which the developers showed us some of the main elements they are working on.

As this is a game developed by Obsidian, in addition to the role-playing elements we must also expect a complex but satisfying system of choices. This is extremely important for the team in fact they explained to us how their desire to create such a complex world and such unique characters serves the player to be able to decide for yourself how to play, thanks to the many choices that can be made during our adventure.

Let's start the demo inside one of the cities of a planet at the mercy of terraforming. We are in this city to find work, which can earn us money or rare materials in exchange for services that require our skills. We find our first assignment from Catherine, which begins to tell us about a problem that he wants to solve and we, based on the level of our skills, will have different answers available, which will allow us to obtain different results.

Accepted the mission from Catherine, who asks us to reach a factory and kill one of her enemies, we leave the city and we are introduced to this unusual world, characterized by a definitely oversized flora and fauna. The terraforming processes have in fact induced modifications, for example in the local fauna, where small insects have turned into gigantic, ugly and dangerous insects.

Our "walk" in Monarch towards the factory allowed us to know some combat mechanics including the "Tactical time" or a mode of action in which time is slowed down and in which by aiming at the enemies we can go to analyze their skills, level, life and any weaknesses.

This time can also be used to target a precise point of the enemy, which will react to damage based on the type of shot fired. In fact, if our weapons are not powerful enough to kill an enemy, we can opt for a strategic approach, wounding the enemy in the leg to slow him down, in one eye to make him blind or in other sensitive points that will allow us to obtain precious time with which also attack other enemies.

We were not shown in detail the shooting system of The Outer Worlds, which was limited only to some sections of the demo, where we were however explained how weapons can be customized with modifiers which allow us to obtain different advantages based on the type of battle we face.

Customization and choice of play style are key to Obsidian, which believes the player must have the possibility to choose how to play and how to deal with certain situations. As the game progresses, in fact, we will get various skill points that will allow us to level certain skills such as charisma, strength, burglar skills, etc., each of which can be useful in certain contexts.

On our way to the factory, for example, we had to do one choice on the approach to have to enter, given the presence of the guards. There was a secret entrance nearby, which you could only access if you had a sufficient level of burglar skill. In the demo we didn't have that ability so we opted for direct contact with the guards, who once we crossed the border intercepted us and asked us what we were doing; at this point we may have various options based on the skills unlocked, such as: intimidate, lie, convince and many others. In this case we decided to lie thanks to our high skill in doing so, which allowed us to enter the factory without colliding with the guards.

Reached the control center, before killing our target we decide to talk to each other to see if he has anything to tell us. As we talk, we discover that he obviously knows Catherine and that if we kill her for him, instead of money he offers us an unlimited supply of supplies. Here are shown some of the alternatives available, thus giving us the possibility, if we want, to kill him, to work with him, or you should be looking for a compromise. In the demo of The Outer Worlds, the developer has not made any choice since the continuation of this mission contains spoilers and therefore invites us to start thinking about the choice we will make in the game once it is available.

The possibility of having such a complex system of choices combined with the team's experience with regards to RPG games, certainly makes us rest assured about the quality of the gameplay and the quantity of activities that will be available.

However, one aspect that has not struck us at all about The Outer Worlds is the artificial intelligence, still too little intelligent and the technical sector in general, which in addition to decidedly unrealistic animations is also characterized by poorly defined textures and in general from a graphic quality that does not reach modern standards. However, we are confident in the team and we hope that for the launch the various problems of pop-ups and in general of the graphic behavior will be solved, so as not to affect the gameplay of the game itself.

The Outer Worlds is a title that is starting to take shape, even if we haven't been able to see everything in detail. The complex system of choices based on both the dialogue and the approach in the missions means that the game is adaptable to all styles of play. We have not been shown in detail the combat system, which from what we have been able to see presents a time slowing system to study the weak points of the enemies and to deliver more precise shots. the technical sector there The Outer Worlds from this first contact seemed not very innovative, in fact both the artificial intelligence of the enemies and the graphics in general suffer from major problems that make the game seem old, even if it has not yet come out.
