Everspace: Stellar Edition - Nintendo Switch Review

Review for Evers Pace. Game for PC, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 26/05/2017 The version for PlayStation 4 came out on 13/02/2019

Almost two years of Nintendo Switch and the support of third parts it is still unsatisfactory. The hybrid console is undoubtedly a success but 90 pieces of the sector such as Electronic Arts or Activision still are wary of bringing their flagship brands such as Battlefield or Call of Duty. Those who certainly did not hold back were the indie developers who immediately understood the potential of a machine with a dual identity. In addition to this, users who buy Nintendo consoles are also usually voracious buyers of titles to the point that the attack-rate is among the highest in the industry.

Publishing now on the Nintendo Switch is therefore a great investment even for those titles that have been on the market for a couple of years now. The latest addition to this long series of conversions is Everspace: Stellar Edition, a space-themed rogue-like already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. But Everspace won't be a bit too expensive for the poor chip Tegra X1 of the car? Judging by the final result, no!

Everspace: Stellar Edition - Nintendo Switch Review
Let's go into more detail: Everspace is a three-dimensional adventure-shooter set in space in which the player is called upon to pilot a ship with which to complete missions of various kinds. Expect environments teeming with space pirates, asteroid showers and breathtaking views, all randomly generated and therefore never the same as the previous ones. The ROCKFISH Games product, however, is roguelike to the core: death during the exploration of a sector is equivalent to returning to the principle of it, while keeping all the objects, resources and upgrades found up to that moment. The trial & error is therefore the basis of the game experience and this mechanic will serve not so much to improve your skills as a pilot or fighter, but rather to forge strategic and managerial skills.

In fact, Everspace has a dual nature and learning to recognize the danger of a group of marauders or to better manage hidden resources is as useful as knowing how to aim and move quickly. Preparation for each new area is therefore essential because it could represent the watershed between a miserable defeat and a brilliant victory. The ship in possession of the protagonist can be customized in several aspects and varying the equipment depending on the mission is highly recommended. The possible combinations are so many and allow you to adapt the aircraft to a large number of play styles.

Being randomly generated, the locations of Everspace: Stellar Edition never reach the design complexity of other titles. Nevertheless, the same sector can vary a lot between one game over and another and this helps not to make exploration stagnant. One of the known problems of this kind of titles is the control system. Fortunately, however, ROCKFISH Games worked with precision and managed to translate the commands of the spacecraft from PC to console very well. Nintendo Switch has in fact all the keys necessary to deliver a satisfying and smooth experience to the user, therefore without hitches or cumbersome actions. Always talking about the conversion, the contents of this Stellar Edition are the same that we find in the other versions and thanks to their high quantity, they will guarantee you a good number of hours of play.

From a technical point of view, however, the Unreal Engine 4 does its dirty job and paints a universe full of details and special effects on the screen. Of course, Everspace on Nintendo Switch is not as beautiful as on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, but the game is still enjoyable and some views are still breathtaking. Good framerate albeit locked at 30 frames per second and equally enjoyable the audio sector; shame about some effects a bit too compressed.

Another indie, another successful conversion. Nintendo Switch is a really cool machine and is almost becoming the home of the indie market. The friendly policies of the Japanese company combined with the excellent sales make the console a sort of promised land. Sure, you need a good base to sell but in this respect, Everspace: Stellar Edition has nothing to fear. A rogue-like based on space combat is a very inviting tidbit, let alone on a console that is also portable. There are some elements that are not really successful, one of all the somewhat simplistic and hasty level design, on the other hand, however, it is a problem that almost all games of this type have. Well done ROCKFISH Games, we can't wait to find out what you have in the works for the future!
