Far Cry 4 - Review

Review for Far Cry 4. Game for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 18/11/2014

The Far Cry brand has long represented the purest essence of what an open world first person shooter should be. The long and full of twists campaign has always been a real trademark for the series, as well as charismatic characters, especially the antagonists, and a vast and vibrant gameplay.

Repeating this success also for the fourth chapter did not have to seem like a simple undertaking but we can certainly say without fear of denial that Ubisoft has succeeded once again.

Far Cry 4 - Review

Welcome to Kyrat

So says Pagan Min, the new antagonist of this fourth chapter, in the advertising of the title that is constantly circulating on the major national channels. Kyrat is a Hymalaian region and we will take on the role of Ajay Ghale, a young man who grew up in America and arrived in this remote mountain area at the end of the world only to scatter the ashes of his mother Ishwari. However, our pilgrimage is not going in the best of ways since on the border with India the drug militias of Pagan Min kidnap us and bring us in front of him for reasons we do not yet fully understand. We can only tell you that this will begin a journey that will simultaneously lead us to discover our roots and to subvert the despotic kingdom of Pagan Min.

While staying on these mountains we will also be able to meet the revolutionary fighters of the Golden Path, at whose top we find Amita and Sabal, united by the same desire for freedom but divided by the methods with which to pursue this result. In fact, Amita only thinks of wealth for her people and for this reason does not disdain drug trafficking while Sabal is dedicated to traditions. We will therefore have to make several choices within the various missions and decide from time to time which side to take. This dualism will in fact be the central experience of the whole story.

Far Cry 4 - Review

The game in addition to the main story is as always very full of side missions, so to speak. It will take tens of hours to explore all of Kyrat. The secondary missions will range from big game hunting sessions, to the conquest of military outposts or even the climbing of communications towers, which are reminiscent of another success from Ubisoft or Assassin's Creed. In this mountain of extra contents there is also no shortage of out-of-body and spiritual adventures, in which we will find ourselves setting foot in Shangri-La, a mystical place of Kirati legends, and together with Reggie and Yogi fight demons of all kinds armed only with a knife or using a mighty white tiger as a sui generis guard dog. In short, there is really something to indulge in.

March and shoot

The gameplay of this fourth chapter faithfully follows what has already been seen in the past, especially in Far Cry 3. Ajay is very agile and at any time will be able to choose which approach to use if more stealth through sidearms or louder, thanks to all the series of weapons that we will have available. The aiming system is always very good and every single weapon can be customized with optical units or silencers of all kinds. Our inventory will be recalled at any time through the radial wheel of the pad and expandable thanks to the various animal skins that we can hunt from time to time. Speaking of fauna, a note of color is represented by the elephants that can even be ridden and used in battle to clear away enemies and obstacles of all kinds.

In terms of vehicles, we will also have a great selection, including a gyrocopter to make flying raids across Kyrat. The map is really vast and therefore without an adequate means of transport it will take you several minutes to reach one point from another on the map. In this regard, the programmers have also introduced an automatic driving system to facilitate movement.

Grow Ajay

The growth of our protagonist follows two main branches and with a little practice and a lot of time available it will not be difficult to unlock all the passive activities available. Skills range from better aiming, increased agility to the possibility of temporary boosts through the use of more or less legitimate substances. The enemies in any case will never worry you too much, even if their artificial intelligence is not entirely poor, since in more than one case they will organize strategies to flush you out. The same cannot be said of the allies, however. In any case, by helping the various non-player characters within the story we can earn additional bonuses and karma points.

All of this is also true for online co-op, where a player will act as a host and can invite a friend to their game, with story progress saved only for the host and extra experience points earned for the guest as well. There will also be the classic timed challenges. The competitive modes also include 5v5 battles in various locations on the boundless map, Demon Mask which is a kind of capture the flag, Outpost and Propaganda.

The beauty of the mountains

From a technical point of view, the title includes incredible details such as breathtaking mountain scenery and a truly maniacal attention to detail. The acting of the protagonists also seems to be taken directly from a Hollywood production. The water effects are also good as well as the convincing dubbing in Spanish as regards the sound sector.

Far Cry 4 arrives at the appointment without certainly disappointing the lovers of the series, but rather by slightly improving a game system that has been proven for some time. We are talking both from a technical and gameplay point of view and therefore the title represents a compulsory purchase for all aficionados of the saga.
