In the last ten years FromSoftware infinitely increased its popularity thanks to the Souls series, but the Japanese studio has been around for 25 years and has developed dozens of games on a huge number of platforms. Among these Xbox, the first, which, despite the very poor success in Japan, could count on an interesting stock of titles from the Land of the Rising Sun thanks to the numerous agreements made by Microsoft Studios.

Metal Wolf Chaos is one of these titles. Released only in Japan, it is a mecha-based TPS, which by the way has nothing to do with Armored Core, one of FromSoftware's best-known series. XD is the remastered version for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, made by General Arcade and published by Devolver Digital, as well as the first version of the game to appear on western markets.

The premises behind Metal Wolf Chaos XD they are delusional: we will impersonate the forty-seventh President of the United States America (taking into account that the current one is the forty-fifth, perhaps FromSoftware's dystopia will prove to be better than reality ... Ed) Michael Wilson (descendant of Woodrow), who, aboard a mech, he will have to quell the revolt headed by his deputy! Honestly, we don't know what else to add, except that trash rules, but this was already understood.

The fervent American patriotism is reinterpreted by an all-Japanese team - which also worked closely with Microsoft - with a result that we could define as a caricature, which however has contributed to making the work a cult within a small circle of gamers. . It was precisely the reaction of fans to Devolver Digital's offer to take care of the publication of a remastered version that prompted FromSoftware to find an agreement.

Another crucial factor in defining the level of trash is the dubbing, which, despite the lack of localization of the game, was already in English. Fortunately, for this re-edition we opted for keep it, for better or for worse (which, in this case, means good, Editor's note). To be fair, General Arcade hasn't put its own flour into this project, simply increasing the resolution; then, of course, there are the usual "modern things", like the adaptation to the 16: 9 format, the automatic saves at the end of the missions, the Trophies / Achievements, etc., but nothing more.

This is evident also and above all by looking at screenshots and in-game videos: Metal Wolf Chaos XD is the same as Metal Wolf Chaos, simply upscaled so as not to make today's players bleed. Clearly the graphics, simple and square, show all its age, but, at least, it is not too unpleasant (even if some elements are undeniably awkward) and there are no problems with fluidity.

On a playful level, Metal Wolf Chaos XD offers fourteen missions almost identical to each other (for a total of about six or seven hours of gameplay): it involves going to a location in the United States (San Francisco, New York, Miami and so on) aboard the Metal Wolf and armed to the teeth to destroy all targets, which can be enemy buildings or war vehicles. All using a gameplay and it recalls that of Armored Core, declined in an even more arcade way.

The control system is simple (remember that the version tested is the one for PlayStation 4): with the levers we move the mecha and the sights, with X you jump, with Square you activate the boost, with Triangolo you make the dunk (once in jump), R2 and L2 shoot themselves. Each of the two arms can be equipped with four weapons, which can be switched by pressing Circle and the corresponding backbone. The weapons are divided into numerous classes (shotgun, assault rifle, bazooka, sniper rifle, etc.) and there are so many, so it is in the player's interest to find money and resources to develop new ones. Unlike Armored Core, the choice of the arsenal to equip is the only possibility of customization for the player, at least until the very tough Hell Mode is reached.

The action is frenetic and dispenses "blastatory" joy enough, but this does not mean that Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a perfect game, quite the contrary. FromSoftware's game is likely to be boring in the long run, due to the remarkable repetitiveness of the gameplay: the types of common enemies are not many, so that the approach to the clashes will remain almost unchanged over time, if not in the presence of the bosses, also considering the absence of customization possibilities outside the 'arsenal; it is true that the weapons are many (too many), but those of the same category are often not so different. FromSoftware tried (and partially succeeded) to mitigate this defect with a fairly heterogeneous level design, which ranges from metropolis to canyons trying to present peculiarities at every level, or almost.

To this we must add the lack of checkpoints: every time you die, even for a trifle (for example, making a mistake in a jump and ending up in the water), you will have to start the mission all over again. It must be said that the missions in themselves are not very long, so the frustration is contained, but already the game formula is repetitive, this game design choice was not needed to make the situation worse.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD - Review

Metal Wolf Chaos XD is almost a carbon copy of the original title, net of the small and scarce modernizations necessary to propose a game in 2019. It offers a lot of action, frenetic but repetitive, and abundant quantities of trash, which have helped to make it a cult at some niches. It is not a game for everyone, especially now that he is fifteen on his back, but we are happy that he has finally arrived in the West.
