Monster Hunter Rise - TGS 2020 preview

Monster Hunter Rise - TGS 2020 preview

Monster Hunter Rise returns to be talked about with a new trailer and new gameplay shown by Capcom during the 2020 edition of the Tokyo Game Show. Capcom, in fact, was one of the main Japanese developers to occupy more panels within the TGS 2020, all dedicated to its new games.

In fact, new videos and images of the highly anticipated Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, Monster Hunter Stories 2 and, of course, Monster Hunter Rise were also shown.

The latter, which will be the new title of the main series of Monster Hunter, had already been announced during the Nintendo Direct Mini and we told you about it in our preview. Today, thanks to the TGS 2020 panel of Capcom, we will be able to expand our discourse on Monster Hunter Rise, since A demo was shown with a long gameplay able to provide us with new and important information about the title. Discover them with us in this new preview of Monster Hunter Rise.

A little bit of Generations and a little bit of World

The first thing that catches your eye when viewing the demo is the game interface. The position and color of the various indicators seem to recall the past of Monster Hunter and, in particular, Generations Ultimate, the latest Monster Hunter title released on a Nintendo home console, among other things. This was done, of course, in order not to make all those who have followed the Monster Hunter series only on Nintendo consoles feel confused. At the same time, we must not forget that Rise sees Yasunori Ichinose as director, the same as in Generations Ultimate.

But as mentioned in the title of this paragraph, Rise will also have a lot of Monster Hunter World. The vastness of the fully interconnected map and fluid gameplay lead us to think that Capcom has seriously understood that, probably, much of the success achieved thanks to World has been achieved thanks to a new conception of the Monster Hunter gameplay: more freedom and less woodiness of the movements were in fact almost two mantras of Capcom in the development of World and this philosophy seems to have also been implemented in Monster Hunter Rise, as we will explain in the next paragraph.

    Nice to see and play

The first approach to the gameplay of Monster Hunter Rise was shown to us in the first trailer of the game, released during the Nintendo Direct Mini, leaving us absolutely convinced and satisfied. After viewing the demo shown during TGS 2020, we can safely confirm the initial feelings and affirm that Monster Hunter Rise is conquering us more and more. The graphic rendering is confirmed to be absolutely satisfying. The RE Engine, used for Rise, is confirmed as an excellent graphics engine that manages to express its power even on a console like Nintendo Switch.

If in the first trailer, Capcom had shown us the village of Kamura, in the demo of TGS 2020 the new setting of the Sacred Ruins was shown: a scenario surrounded by nature, full of waterfalls, rivers, mountains and the ruins of ancient temples.

As for the actual gameplay, one of the elements that struck us most was the wire insect. This object, which can be used as a sort of grappling hook to move vertically or as a weapon, has returned to show itself in the demo, allowing us to understand much more its functionality.

First of all, it is confirmed that the thread insect will allow us to move vertically to any place on the map. However, we will not be able to use it for as many times and for as long as we want.

When used for travel, the wire bug will have two charging bars, each of which will run out with each use of the object. In any case, the bars will reload quite quickly, so the movements that will take place thanks to the wire insect, will not be penalized much by this game mechanics.

Everything changes, however, with regard to the use of the wire insect within the fighting. In the demo, in fact, a fight against one of the new monsters of the game was shown: the Tetranodon. As we wrote in our first preview, the wire insect can also be used during a fight.

However, in this case, the charging bars (which will always be two, basic) will reset much more slowly, so it will be necessary to think carefully when to use the wire insect in a fight.

It is fair to point out that within the map we will be able to find new wire insects that will allow us to add an additional charging bar (both for the movements and for the fights) to the two standards but the effect of the extra bar will end in a short time.

Also worth mentioning is the use of the wire insect as a tool to perform a parry: in fact, if we manage to use the wire insect at the same time as the enemy attacks us, we will perform a perfect counterattack without suffering any damage.

The gameplay of the TGS 2020 demo, has seen the use of double blades as the main weapon that, combined with the use of the wire insect, allow really interesting and spectacular attack combos to see.

Obviously, many other weapons will be available and we can also change them during a mission. In Monster Hunter Rise we can in fact enter a small hut, like in World, and change weapons, equipment, eat and much more.

A walk with Canyne and Felyne

Another aspect that we had focused on in our first preview of Monster Hunter Rise was the presence of the Canyne and the Felyne. The two, in fact, will be able to accompany us throughout our adventure and take part in the clashes, with the Canyne that will act by attacking the enemies and the Felyne that, instead, will have a supporting role towards us. But not only: the Canyne will also be rideable and can make us move faster around the map. Regarding this last mechanic, thanks to the demo, we now know two more details:

    • The canyne will be fully guided by us (as opposed to the Monster Hunter World mounts that go straight to the established goal).
    • The canyne will only be able to climb vertically surfaces with ivy or, in general, natural elements to which it can cling.

March 26, 2021 is still far away, but Monster Hunter Rise is certainly one of the Nintendo Switch titles that we are looking forward to with more trepidation. Its gameplay mechanics and its graphic rendering lead it to be potentially one of the best Monster Hunters ever, blending elements of the past with more contemporary elements of the series. We expect new information shortly about especially the monsters present in the title, but we are sure that Capcom has many surprises in store for us and will not disappoint expectations. What is sure is that we will keep you updated on any news or announcements about Monster Hunter Rise.
