MXGP 2019 - Review

Review for MXGP 2019 - The Official Motocross Videogame. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 27/08/2019

With MXGP 2019, Milestone packs a title perfectly represented by the word "functional". The new licensed game dedicated to motocross is in fact a title of worthy workmanship, worthily presented and packaged. In the hours of play that have accompanied us in view of this review we have tried every mode, including the new Playground and the Track Editor, and the resulting experience is in line with the expectations placed in MXGP 2019. It is a fun game, without insights that make you cry for a miracle or particularly memorable content, but which remains in line with the experience always offered by the Milestone series.

MXGP 2019 - Review

From the start, the impact with MXGP 2019 is lackluster. Everything ranging from the introduction to the campaign (which happens instantly) to the aesthetics of the menus, to the soundtracks present in them, points to anonymity. The minimalist aesthetic based on white backgrounds and writings in the menus does not remain impressed and returns a feeling that will soon turn into certainty: the game does not pay any attention to what surrounds its core, namely the races. This negatively affects the performance of the new mode: the Playground. This should serve as a pastime to break the monotony between the various races offered by the other modes, however it is presented and carried out with a notable laziness. The content of Playground is limited to a small freely explorable map in which to undertake some challenges, such as slalom or timed races. Unfortunately, we cannot promote this addition, because while it does not detract from the modes already present in the other titles, we find it very lazily integrated into the game. Another demonstration of the superficial presentation of MXGP 2019 lies in the tutorial. To build a satisfying and in-depth guide, Milestone employed practically every single key on the D-Pad of a Playstation 4; this element, combined with a difficult guide to master, would have made an introduction to driving mechanics through tutorial extremely useful, which is instead absent.

MXGP 2019 - Review

Leaving aside the notions of what the title fails to realize, let's move on to talk about what Milestone has acutely built, in what ultimately remains an excellent game for fans. The heart of MXGP 2019 are, of course, the MXGP and MX2 races. On this fundamental aspect, the new title based on the MX does not disappoint in the least, thanks to an enviable depth in the driving system, complex to learn at first glance but extremely satisfying and fun to refine once the initial wall is overcome. Driving motocross in MXGP 2019 is satisfying and conveys a feeling similar to the heaviness of having to get back on a motorcycle after a bend even to people who, like this writer, have always and only ridden motorcycles with fairing. In addition to the immediate satisfaction of the guide, MXGP 2019 manages to deepen further thanks to different game settings such as the choice of the physics of the environment, bike and character, the existence or not of impacts between riders and also a selectable difficulty that we found well balanced. Outside of the settings, the bikes themselves and the rider can also affect the riding experience. MCGP 2019 allows you to customize the bike and rider, both through single pieces that modify the statistics of the vehicles, and through sponsorships that instead influence the appearance of the rider.

However, even during the races we found some annoying programming flaws: it is not unusual, especially when using the realistic physics setting, that the game arbitrarily decides to make the bike automatically respawn a few meters behind a slightly wide corner. This happens not only when the vehicle is now unrecoverable, but also in curves that would not have created problems or impacted any obstacles, unlike what is claimed by the MXGP 2019 respawn script. Fortunately, this is not a problem that is too present, which therefore does not irremediably affect the undoubted value of the driving system of the Milestone title.

MXGP 2019 - Review

MXGP 2019 is exactly the title it was meant to be. An extremely fun motocross-based racing game with a deeper driving system than you might think at first glance. Unfortunately, Milestone made no effort to try to present its product in the best possible way, even meeting real design errors. Playground mode was also rejected, which fails in its intent to bring some fresh air into the gameplay. A title recommended for enthusiasts and which can also be valid for introducing newbies to the brand, even if they will have to overcome an initial wall not just.
