Becoming number one is not difficult, but staying there is, even if this does not apply to all video game creators, and certainly 2K and the Visual Concept studio are part of this small circle. The NBA 2K series always remains the flagship in basketball simulations and in this sense NBA 2K16 once again manages to renew itself, increasing its quality and beating all the competition. With some improvements and some new additions, the title of Visual Concept seeks to achieve total perfection, consolidating itself as the best basketball simulation video game. Find out in this review.

The Career Film

Like every edition, what makes NBA 2K the best video game of its kind is an excellent development of the career mode in which, once our player is created, we will find ourselves climbing the hierarchies to become an NBA phenomenon. In this sense, Visual Concept sought a way to renew its most successful mode by seeking help from director Spike Lee. Career mode then turns into a kind of movie about your player, starting with High School games, then moving on to College games, up to the NBA. In the film directed by Spike Lee we will take on the role of Freq, Frequency Vibration, our digital alter ego to whom we will be able to give our likeness with the official game editor. As we have already said, We will start from Harlem in the High School tournament, choosing from one of the three available teams, we will then arrive at the College, in which to choose the NCAA team we would like to play for and all officially licensed, such as UCLA, Louisville, Arizona, Kansas , Georgetown and more, and finally we will sign a contract with an NBA team. Growing up in an NBA roster and unleashing good performances on the field, we will, as usual, have the opportunity to strengthen our player, increasing their skills and unlocking new types of accessories, all with the usual Virtual Currency, the official currency with which to buy everything what we need in the title.

The alternative ways to career remain unchanged such as My Park, in which we will play on the pitches with our alter ego, to earn Virtual Currency in order to strengthen our basketball player. This mode has also been revamped, with the addition of new cities and new factions. In addition to this, the new 2K Pro-Am mode is also included, i.e. the ability to play with other players or create your own team with five other friends and to challenge connected opponents. There is also an editor that allows us to modify every aspect of our team: from the type of undershirt to use, to the parquet on our playing field, to the electronic sounds for every action we will perform on the pitch.

We also find this same editor in the My GM mode, in which we will become the Director of an NBA team, having to manage the team, contract renewals, new purchases and also wanting the training and rotations of our basketball players. The My Team mode, however, remains solid and unchanged, a sort of Ultimate Team of EA Sports video games in the NBA version, whose goal is to be able to build our dream team, opening the packages and finding the basketball players stickers of the present and the past. We will be able to play on the same team with LeBron James and Michael Jordan, forming a team of almost invincible players. By winning games and playing in the various modes, such as Dominion, Road To Playoff or Challenge, which remain unchanged compared to the titles of the series, we will conquer our usual Virtual Currency with which to make purchases. We will also have the ability to create custom leagues with My League in which to include NBA teams and Euroleague teams in the same league. We close with the mode that allows us to watch the highlights of the games, exclusive interviews and much more, or the NBA 2KTV mode, which provides us with videos including some dedicated to the creation of the video game.

In Search Of The Basket

The gameplay of the video game remains quite unchanged compared to the old titles. The shooting system remains unchanged, with a bar placed under the player, which allows us to understand when to release the shot, once the correct elevation is reached to try to go to the basket. This is influenced by the basketball player we will use, his shooting ability, and his position. The passage system is also untouched, with the possibility of calling the quick passages by associating them with the controller keys, or using the three different types that are offered to us by the video game, which consist of a simple passage, in passage by pressing the ball on the parquet , and in the lob, with which to try to close even the dunks in Alley-oop or other types of spectacular actions based on the skills of our basketball player. With a simple button we can call the block of the partner to make a Pick 'N Roll or a Fade, or even call an offensive or defensive pattern without being too invasive on the screen and disturbing the game vision. However, in the absence of a real tutorial, the game remains quite inaccessible for newbies, although there will still be some explanatory lessons to learn the basic elements of the game, such as making a pass or a shot, or even a dunk to the basket.

The level of graphics once again borders on perfection both in the level of detail in the creation of the players, and in the surrounding elements, such as the fans in the arena, the reflections on the floor, the dance of the cheerleaders, the movement of the team's mascots. Using also the Body Scan technique, Visual Concept not only made the faces of the basketball players identical to the real ones, but also the athletes' physique is processed with respect to its real part, giving greater diversity to the various bodies present in the game, and creating a level of detail that remains unattainable. The sound, as well as the soundtrack, is treated in detail, from the noise of the building to the sound of the shoes and the net of the basket. All this is helped by an consistently excellent tracklist featuring the likes of Jay Z and Club Dogo.

The problem of sometimes unstable online seems not to have been completely resolved yet, although compared to other titles the servers seem to be more stable in each game mode and matchmaking has been further improved for online challenges.

NBA 2K16 - Review

NBA 2K16 is therefore confirmed as the best basketball simulation video game and the best sportsman. With the established game system and new additions, Visual Concept comes close to achieving near-total perfection. The graphics, which reach the maximum details, and an accurate sound make the video game a must have for basketball lovers. NBA 2K16 is the sports video game par excellence.
