Project Resistance - TGS 2019 preview

Capcom is reliving its golden years: with the release of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5, the impression is that the glorious PlayStation 2 era has been dropped into the current gen, all making products as far away as possible from a mere commercial operation, perfectly able to satisfy our demanding palates as gamers who claim to taste only top quality products.

Project Resistance - which for the moment remains a provisional name - does not invent anything new, but it does it with a skill that makes us drool at the mouth even if we were a Licker. The game consists of a PvP 4 against 1 in which a mastermind gamer will have the task of hunting down the other four "simple" humans, who will instead have the task of solving puzzles to escape from the game map, all obviously trying to stay alive. Last-minute rumors indicate that the game could also include a single player mode, but surely the focus of the experience will be the challenge with other players in the flesh.

Nothing that hasn't already been seen in games like Friday the 13th The Game or Dead by Daylight, in short. But this time it is different, because the name of Resident Evil and the signature of Capcom are able to turn the spotlight on this project by giving it unique characteristics that the aforementioned titles have lacked. First of all, all the variegated horror bestiary of RE: the mastermind will be able to command Zombie, Licker and - for the first time in the Resident Evil series - it will even be possible to control the fearsome Tyrant. This player will also have the power to manipulate the environment, will have access to security cameras and will be able to set traps, all with the intent of making life as difficult as possible for the other four unfortunates.

These, for their part, will still have reason to exist and material to have fun: membership in four classes with distinct unique abilities - breakthrough, support, offensive and hacker - grants depth to gameplay whatever your preferred approach, as well as encouraging collaboration between survivors, the only valid method to escape unscathed from the multiple attacks of the mastermind.

At TGS it will be possible to test Project Resistance in advance, while one will follow closed beta from 4 to 7 October dedicated to Xbox Insider Program members and RE Ambassadors. Until September 18, however, on the game website it is possible to register to request registration for the public beta.

This is what we currently know about Project Resistance, which as the name suggests (or perhaps as Capcom wants us to believe) is still in the design phase and could undergo important changes before reaching our gaming peripherals. What is certain is that the proposed formula, already tested by other titles, can only benefit from the characters, the charisma of the brand and the never too abused setting of the laboratories in the suburban land of Raccoon City. Finally, the RE Engine is certainly a guarantee of spectacular images and a search for photorealism, but contaminated by sporadic arcade brushstrokes that we RE fans adore because they have always been the trademark of the series.

The belonging of Project Resistance to the Resident Evil universe does not mean that it can be defined as a survival horror: although there are many of the characteristic elements of the genre, this spin-off is clearly designed to offer more frenetic and less exploratory fun. . However, we know so little that we could be pleasantly surprised - and we sincerely hope that it will - in following this spiritual successor to Resident Evil Outbreak, who at the moment presents himself with all the credentials to be the umpteenth King who cannot miss fan collection.
