    Remothered: Tormented Fathers - Review

After the good impressions provided by the Early Access version of Remothered: Tormented Fathers, it is with great curiosity that we approached the final version of the game, determined to be able to have an overview of this first work of Chris Darril e Stormind Games,  collective behind the title. The expectations for the short portion of the missing game were not very high, but the hope was that everything would remain on the level of the first 3/4 of the adventure, thus giving us a title that is lacking in many respects, but definitely valid and deserving of interest, especially for fans of the Horror genre.

Unfortunately, not everything went as it should, in a final sequence that is always interesting from the point of view of the story (albeit with some major falls) but which is wrecked ruinously from the point of view of the gameplay, to the point of going to ruin the atmosphere built from play.

But let's go in order, better delineating this Remothered: Tormented Fathers.

The title presents itself to us as a horror with a strong psychological component, which according to the developers themselves aims to immerse the player in the story by focusing on the realism of the experience, through plausible puzzles and common characters turned into terrible threats. The whole is based on a game system that draws heavily from classics of the past such as Clock Tower and Rule of Rose, with relentless enemies that leave us the only chance to escape. The plot is very interesting, and from its beginning it covers the narration of mysteries upon mysteries, intriguing the player and pushing him to continue to find out more., capturing it more with each new element introduced, up to the inevitable (and well realized) twists of the final part.

If the narrative is the strong point of the production and keeps the promises of giving a story focused on the psychological penetration of the protagonists, the same cannot be said of the gameplay, which very soon begins to betray its intentions. Continuing with the adventure, in fact, you will be faced with puzzles and situations that are anything but sensible, typical of many genre games but that strongly clash with the atmosphere that the game tries to deliver., that is to find ourselves in a plausible context. Between puzzles whose solution requires far from logical reasoning and "common" enemies that would stand up to Wolverine in a contest of resistance to offenses, the player's suspension of disbelief goes to be blessed very quickly, leaving a certain bitterness in the mouth .

Despite these problems, the open structure of the title, which allows us to freely explore the mansion in which the title is set, combined with the constant tension capable of arousing the constant chanting and chattering of our pursuers and the curiosity to shed light on the mysteries that surround us, create for the whole first part of the adventure an alchemy that manages to bewitch the player, making up for most of the defects that afflict it.

But when we reach the final part, everything collapses like a house of cards. The exploration leaves room for claustrophobic sections, veritable labyrinths of corridors that make "trial & error" their verb, sections which, moreover, underline some limits in the programming of artificial intelligence, and also disavow all that that the title had tried to build. Between enemies with teleportation and moments in which you have to pray that the game works as it should, the final part of Remothered: Tormented Fathers is one of the most boring and frustrating sections that we have happened to play in recent times, enough to make us think that the developers have acted with some haste to release the final version of the game.

The conclusion of the story then gets lost a bit in the attempt to philosophize in the face of a lack of concreteness in answering questions as simple as they are fundamental, leaving many questions open for probable sequels, but at the same time also a sense of rather unresolved important.

In conclusion, we would like to recommend this Remothered to fans of the genre, who will find loads of references both filmic and videogame, as well as well-constructed characters and a complex and well-crafted story. However, be aware that there are limits, important limits and that probably on more than one occasion you will find yourself decidedly perplexed about some level design choices, forced to fight with the game itself to continue in the enjoyment of the story. Promoted on trust then, with the hope that the next works by Darril and associates can raise the bar beyond sufficiency, perhaps making us feel proud in reading the credits.
