XPG Precog Gaming Headset - Review

The world of gaming headsets is extremely wide and colorful: we find headsets for every type of game, Console and PC, which differ in connection type. Lately, luckily, it is increasingly easier to find headphones that can adapt to any type of console, thanks to the presence of multiple connectors. Today we are here to tell you about XPG Precog, wired headset from the Adata Gaming brand.

The packaging that encloses our pair of headphones is extremely special, because it is a convenient carrying case where, in addition to keeping all the accessories in the bundle tidy, we can store our headset when we are not using it or use it as a travel case, so as not to ruin XPG Precog during the movements.

The packaging is black and features the XPG logo. The opening is entrusted to a zipper and, once opened, in addition to finding the headphones, we also find practical compartments for storing all the cables.

The bundle is really rich and will allow us to use XPG Precog with any device. We find a USB Type C to USB Type A extension cable, a 3,5-pole 4mm jack cable with volume controls and button to disable the microphone and finally a 3,5mm jack extension with which to split the connectors into one for audio and one for the microphone. All these cables, to offer better quality and durability over time, are covered with braided nylon and the connectors are all gold plated. In addition to all this we also find a quick instruction manual and XPG themed stickers.

The structure of the headset proposed by Adata is double-arched, one dedicated to automatic adjustment - so as not to exert too much force on the head for greater comfort - and one dedicated to supporting the two pavilions. The first arch is made of plastic, while the second is of aluminum, in order to make the headset more robust.

The two pavilions are extremely large and identical. In the center we find the word XPG surrounded by a red LED that can only be activated when we use the headset via USB.

At the bottom of the left pavilion we find all types of connections, namely: a jack to connect the removable microphone, a jack to connect with analog devices and a USB Type C port to connect XPG Precog to our PC or any other device that supports. On the right pavilion, however, we find no connection.

The cushions are angled memory foam for a more natural fit and even more comfort. They are lined with extremely comfortable synthetic leather, but during the hottest days they can definitely cause sweating.

The pavilions are rotatable and able to rotate 180 ° in both directions, so as not to disturb the neck during game breaks.

XPG Precog is the world's first gaming headset equipped with double electrostatic dynamic drivers: They are designed to cover high and low frequencies, delivering clear, distortion-free audio. Drivers are able to cover one frequency response ranging from 5 Hz up to 50.000 Hz, with an impedance of 32Ω and a sensitivity of 102 dB / mW at 1 KHz.

When we use the headset in USB mode we will have three profiles already installed and usable through the switch present in the controller integrated in the cable.

We find a mode that emulates the virtual surround 7.1 in order to have a total immersion in games where the audio component is fundamental; a FPS mode which emphasizes the shots and footsteps of enemies, so as to identify them with extreme ease; a Music mode that will allow us to listen to our favorite audio tracks clearly and without distortion.

On this controller we also find a wheel to adjust the general volume, a button to disable the XPG Precog LEDs, the button to disable the microphone and a switch to enable or disable ENC, that is Adata's technology for the suppression of ambient noise, in order to let our fellow soldiers hear us clearly and precisely.

The microphone is unidirectional and will only capture the noises coming from the front. The frequency response is 20Hz - 20.000Hz with a sensitivity of -38 db.

XPG Precog is a highly talented gaming headset, but will it be able to satisfy us during our games? Let's start first with talking about ergonomics, a fundamental component in a headset because it will allow us to use it for a prolonged period. The total weight of the headset is 362 grams, not very high but there are lighter headphones. Despite this, Adata performed an excellent weight balance and, thanks to the memory foam pads and the double arch structure, XPG Precog proved to be very comfortable, especially during long gaming sessions, without making us accuse various pains in the head or neck.

As mentioned at the beginning of the review, the headset is compatible with all devices currently on the market, thanks to the connection both bluetooth and 3,5mm jack. The only device with which they are not compatible are iPhones and iPads with lightning connection (problem that is solved by using an adapter). We tried XPG Precog with many devices: PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. In all devices, except for the Microsoft console, we were able to use the USB connection.

The audio, as we had already imagined when reading the specifications, is of a high standard. Using the USB connection we were able to test the three profiles already installed, while with the jack connection no. The headset is able to give us a unique immersion in any type of game, especially using 7.1 mode. In The Witcher 3, XPG Precog has managed to give us even more immersion and make us enjoy even more the great soundtrack and amazing sound effects. The FPS mode, on the other hand, managed to give us a considerable advantage on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, emphasizing the footsteps of the enemies so as not to be caught unprepared during the War Zone mode. The Music mode instead represents the right balance of frequencies, without focusing too much on the bass, giving a precise and clear audio.

The microphone is also of a good level: our playmates will be able to hear us perfectly without any kind of disturbance. The ENC mode manages to very well eliminate any kind of noise that can annoy our fellow soldiers. If we were to find a fault with this headset it is certainly the lack of an accompanying software, in order to create our own customized audio profiles.

XPG Precog Gaming Headset - Review

XPG Precog is an uncompromising headphone and is able to offer us great sound on any device, both USB and Jack. The comfort is of a high standard and after hours of play we will not feel any discomfort in the head, even if we are wearing glasses. The three pre-installed modes are capable of greatly improving our gaming experience, especially 7.1 surround virtualization. The microphone with the ENC mode attached manages to capture our voice perfectly, in order to give commands to our fellow soldiers without creating misunderstandings.

If you are looking for a high-end headset that can provide you with great sound in any situation, XPG Precog is for you. You can buy it for about 145 € including VAT.
