Disgaea 5 Complete - Review

Review for Disgaea 5 Complete. Game for PC and Nintendo Switch, the video game was released on 03/03/2017 The version for PC came out on 22/10/2018

The Disgaea series has always stood out for its brazen tendency to excess. Whether it's the typically Japanese craziness that pervades his stories, or the dozens of hours spent leveling your party to levels normally unthinkable, the Nippon Ichi series is now known for pushing the tactical JRPG genre further and further beyond conventional limits.

And speaking of limits, Disgaea 5 Complete frees us from the constraint of having to play sitting at home, taking advantage of the portability of Nintendo Switch to be taken anywhere as well as including all the DLCs released for the game, giving us the chapter of the richest series ever.

Disgaea 5 Complete - Review

I am vengeance!

If you are new to the series and were wondering: no, to play Disgaea 5 you don't need to have played the previous titles - aside from a few recurring quotes and characters, each story in the series is independent.

The demon universe is in chaos again since an ambitious and powerful overlord named Void Dark began its expansion across all known Netherworlds. The game will put us in the shoes of Killia, a lone demon who apparently has a heavy unfinished business with the heinous overlord, which he wants to avenge for something that we will only discover later. On her way to revenge, Killia will come across other demons who like him want to end the dark reign of Void Dark.

Certainly the Disgaea series has never been interested in gaining a reputation for deep fiction, focusing more on humor; compared to the past, however, there seems to be a timid effort to take oneself a little more seriously, involving moderately more important issues such as revenge, despotic oppression that suffocates freedom, etc. The slightly more serious tone, however, is absolutely relative, given that the storyline will proceed as always between absurd scenes and idiotic dialogues. If the plot cannot be defined exactly extraordinary, the good characterization of the characters is to be commended.

Although they are fun, if you are not a fan of the large amount of dialogue that often pervades Japanese-style games, you may find certain lengths of the narration of the story excessive.

The bigger they are, the badder they are

The gameplay of Disgaea 5 Complete it has remained unchanged from the PS4 version, details of which you can find in our review.

Once again we will have to deal with one of the deepest and most layered battle systems on the square, and we will have to juggle group attacks, mergers of multiple units, demons that can turn into weapons to use and "towers" of companions to manage. As for the original, by inflicting but above all suffering damage we will fill the Revenge bar which, once complete, will allow the overlords of our group to activate the Revenge Mode. In this mode the overlord will not only have pumped stats and automatically inflict critical hits, but will activate its special power that will be different from character to character, making them even more diverse from each other on critical occasions.

Disgaea 5 Complete - Review

In addition to the already 40 classes available for our characters, in this Complete version of the game there are three more: celestial hostess, kunoichi and sorcerer. In addition to a myriad of other DLCs, the real highlights of this edition are the eight additional quests that will allow us to have on our side protagonists already seen in other chapters such as Laharl, Etna, Adell, Valvatorez, Fuka, but also characters taken from other Nippon Ichi titles such as Makai Kingdom and The Witche and the Hundred Knight. Completing these quests will allow you to transform your party into a series dream team.

As already mentioned, given the longevity of the game, its new portable dimension is a real blessing. At Nippon Ichi, however, they do not seem to have much sympathy for touch screens, since Disgaea 5 Complete follows the same fate as the versions of Disgaea 3 and 4 for PS Vita: no touch controls. Really a shame, as they would have lent themselves very well for a game of this type.

Demonic style

Technically, Disgaea 5's Switch conversion is very similar to PS4, too. Although graphically it cannot really be called a new generation title, there are still some very slight phenomena of decreased fluidity here, especially in the game hub.

Apart from these trifles, even on Switch Disgaea 5 is a feast for the eyes with the usual design of the series that returns in all its style and its vibrant colors.

The soundtrack is also catchy and pleasant to listen to, even if it is not among the best in the series. The dubbing also stands at good levels, but without particularly excelling, and is available in both English and the original Japanese.

Disgaea 5 Complete - Review

After almost ten years away from Nintendo consoles, Disgaea arrives on the flagship of the Big N with its most advanced and complete chapter in terms of gameplay and quantity of content. If you are a lover of Japanese strategy and humor, you shouldn't hesitate to buy Disgaea 5 Complete, which is currently the only one of its kind on Switch, awaiting the new incarnation of Fire Emblem. If you already have the original version for PS4, however, buying the Complete version may not be worth it, unless you are particularly interested in the DLC included or you believe it is essential to always carry it with you to finally allow you to dedicate the hours necessary to dissect it. as you always wanted.
